Dear Pena Mental Health,

I’m writing to you today as a voice from within, sharing a story that demands to be heard. My name is Nasir Jahid, and I’m currently at the Macon Transitional Center in Georgia.

I’ve seen firsthand the devastating consequences of inadequate medical response in our correctional facilities.

Two lives, lost too soon. Two families torn apart. Two stories that could’ve been prevented.

I’ve documented my experience and created two videos that tell this story

Eye-level view of a lush green forest with sunlight filtering through the leaves

Videos That Tell This Story

Video 2: (FYI: That’s me in the red shirt): https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1CmhkCq8mk/

These videos show the reality of what’s happening behind bars. The lack of CPR-trained staff, the delayed responses, the lives lost due to preventable cardiac emergencies.

The worst part? I took action while several officers and inmates stood by, doing nothing. I was the only one who tried to save him. And it wasn’t enough.

It’s a moment that haunts me. I still have nightmares, reliving that young man’s face, the desperation in his eyes. I remember the taste of his blood and bodily fluids, a harsh reminder of what could’ve been done differently.

This happened in August 2024 at the Smith Transitional Center in Claxton, GA. It’s a place that’s supposed to help people transition back into society, but for that young man, it was a death sentence.

The Red Shirt Act is my call to action. It’s a plea for change, for accountability, and for the lives of those who are often forgotten.

I’m asking you to share this story, to shine a light on this crisis, and to demand action.

I sincerely believe that together, we can save lives.  Further, we can make history and make positive and lasting changes in jails and prisons throughout the world.

Sincerely,

Nasir Jahid
